What is Emtone?

Emtone offers a unique solution for those seeking smoother skin. It is the first and only device that simultaneously delivers thermal and mechanical energy under the skin surface to treat all major contributing factors to cellulite. Combined, these two technologies have a synergistic effect that neither could achieve on its own.

Emtone is an option for anyone interested in non-invasive cellulite reduction and overall improvement of skin appearance. The treatment involves no needles, incisions, anesthesia or downtime, and there are no skin type or BMI restrictions.

What is Cellulite and Why Does it Occur?

Cellulite is a common, yet often misunderstood, condition. Contrary to popular belief, it is not solely a result of excess weight or a lack of exercise. It can affect individuals of all body types and sizes, including those who are slender or physically fit.

Cellulite manifests as dimpled or lumpy skin, most frequently on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. It is often described as having a texture similar to an orange peel or cottage cheese. While science has been unable to pinpoint an exact cause of cellulite, evidence suggests there are many possible contributing factors:

  • Genetic Predisposition — Genetics play a significant role in determining skin structure, fat distribution and the likelihood of cellulite development.
  • Hormonal Influences — Hormones, particularly estrogen, are believed to influence cellulite formation. This is why cellulite is more prevalent in women, especially during periods of hormonal change such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause.
  • Lifestyle Factors — Though they are not direct causes, factors such as diet, exercise habits and overall body fat percentage may influence the severity and visibility of cellulite.
  • Circulatory and Lymphatic Factors — Impaired blood flow and lymphatic drainage in certain areas can contribute to the formation and persistence of cellulite.
  • Skin Thickness and Elasticity — Thinner skin or a decrease in skin elasticity with age can make cellulite more noticeable.

On a structural level, cellulite primarily develops in the subcutaneous fat layer below the epidermis (surface) and dermis (second layer) of the skin. This layer contains fat cells encased in a network of fibrous bands called septae, which tether the skin to deeper structures. When fat cells increase in size, and the septae become thicker and less flexible with age, the fat can push through the septae and create the characteristic dimpled appearance of cellulite.

How Does Emtone Reduce Cellulite?

Emtone is uniquely effective as a cellulite treatment because it addresses five underlying causes of the condition:

  • Tightened fibrous bands (septae)
  • Enlarged fat chambers
  • Loss of skin elasticity due to collagen and elastin depletion
  • Poor blood flow
  • Metabolic waste retention

This is accomplished through a combination of thermal (heat-based) and mechanical (pressure-based) energies. The thermal aspect comes from radiofrequency energy, which gently heats the skin to tighten existing collagen fibers and stimulate new elastin and collagen production. The mechanical effect comes from acoustic waves, which enhance circulation and lymphatic drainage in the treated area. Improved blood flow and fluid dynamics help flush out waste and excess fluids to further smooth the skin’s surface.

What is the Difference Between Emtone and Emsculpt NEO?

Emtone and Emsculpt NEO both come from BTL, but they address completely different concerns.

Emsculpt NEO focuses on muscle toning and fat reduction. It combines radiofrequency energy with high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to simultaneously burn fat and build muscle, offering a comprehensive body contouring solution. Like Emtone, Emsculpt NEO is non-invasive, requires no downtime and has short treatment sessions that are easy to fit into a busy schedule.

Emtone is the answer if you are seeking smoother skin and less visible cellulite. Emsculpt NEO is the solution if you want fat reduction and stronger, more defined muscles. If you are seeking all of these benefits, Emtone and Emsculpt NEO are complementary treatments that can be performed back-to-back.

Who is a Candidate for Emtone Treatments?

Most individuals with cellulite can receive Emtone treatments. Emtone is effective across all skin tones, genders and ages, as well as various body types. Clients who are close to their ideal weight typically benefit the most from treatments, as the results are most visible. Emtone is not designed to be a weight loss treatment.

Individuals with certain medical conditions may not be ideal candidates for Emtone. Pregnant women and those who use pacemakers are not candidates for this treatment due to the radiofrequency energy involved.

During your consultation at Aesthetic Polyclinic, our specialists will conduct a thorough review of your skin and cellulite concerns to determine whether Emtone is right for you. Based on this assessment, we will provide personalized recommendations, which may include Emtone alone or in combination with other body contouring treatments for optimal results.

What Steps Should Be Taken Before an Emtone Treatment?

To get the best results from your Emtone treatment, you should establish a healthy, active lifestyle and stay well-hydrated for one to two weeks pre-treatment. Avoid excessive sun exposure and smoking.

On the day of your treatment, leave your skin free of any lotions or skincare products, and wear comfortable clothing. Your provider will need easy access to the areas being treated during your appointment. You will need to remove any jewelry and put away your electronic devices before starting your treatment.

What is the Emtone Treatment Process?

A typical Emtone treatment takes about 20 minutes. It is performed while you rest in a relaxing lying-down position.

Before beginning the treatment, your provider will apply a conductive lotion to help the handpiece glide over your skin and a grounding pad to deliver the radiofrequency energy safely. Then, they will work the handpiece continuously over the treatment area to ensure even coverage and effective treatment.

Throughout the session, your provider will check in with you to ensure you remain comfortable. Adjustments can be made to the device settings if necessary.

Is Emtone Painful?

The sensation of Emtone may be unusual, but patients do not describe it as painful. You will feel a warming similar to a hot stone massage from the radiofrequency energy and intense mechanical vibrations. Overall, Emtone treatments are well tolerated and do not require any type of anesthetic.

What is the Downtime and Recovery After Emtone Cellulite Reduction?

Immediately following your session, you can return to your daily routine without restrictions. You may experience a sensation of mild warmth in the treated area, similar to the afterglow of a light workout or a warm bath. This sensation is normal and typically subsides within a few hours. Some clients notice redness or tenderness in the treated area.

Post-treatment care is minimal. You are encouraged to stay hydrated and may resume your regular skincare routine straight away.

What Results Can Be Achieved with Emtone?

Collagen and elastin production do not occur immediately. These processes take place gradually over a series of weeks, with full results emerging four to six months after completing your recommended number of Emtone sessions.

Research backs Emtone’s efficacy. In one study, cellulite was reduced in 93% of cases. Emtone’s manufacturer, BTL, reports a 90% patient satisfaction rate. According to BTL, the device is 64% more effective than standalone treatments for building elastin and 59% more effective than standalone treatments for building collagen.

How Many Treatment Sessions May Be Needed?

Some clients notice initial improvements after their first or second session. The full effects of Emtone are typically more apparent after completing a series of treatments. The standard protocol is four sessions scheduled one to two times per week. You may require more or fewer depending on how advanced your cellulite is and the number of areas you wish to have treated.
