What Is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light, commonly known as IPL, is a light-based technology used in many aesthetic and dermatological procedures. Unlike lasers that emit a single wavelength of light, IPL devices produce a broad spectrum, allowing all skin types, hair colors and fine hair to be treated.

Our IPL system comes from Palomar Medical Technologies. In the 1990s, Palomar pioneered permanent hair reduction after receiving the first FDA clearance for this procedure. Since then, the company was acquired by Cynosure, but its devices remain the industry standard that all others are compared to. The technology has been continuously refined and optimized over the years, giving us treatments that are safer, faster and more effective than their predecessors.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal uses a single wavelength of light that targets melanin in the hair follicles. The concept of laser hair removal has been around for a long time, but the technology has improved greatly in both efficiency and comfort.

Our laser hair removal system of choice is the Soprano laser from Alma. The Soprano laser is renowned for its precision, versatility and virtually pain-free experience. While older hair removal lasers were limited to the skin types and hair colors they could target, this advanced system is designed to treat all skin and hair types safely and effectively.

How Do IPL and Laser Hair Removal Work?

Both IPL and laser hair removal work by targeting the melanin pigment found in hair follicles. During the procedure, the melanin absorbs the light energy and converts it into heat, which then damages the hair follicle while sparing the surrounding skin.

The results of IPL and laser hair removal are cumulative. Over time, the damage to the hair follicles inhibits future hair growth, leading to long-lasting hair reduction in the treated areas.

What Are the Benefits of IPL and Laser for Hair Removal?

With their advanced technology, IPL and the Alma Soprano laser not only ensure smoother skin but also offer a range of additional benefits that make them preferred choices for hair removal:

  • Non-invasive treatment
  • Long-lasting results
  • Suitable for many body areas, skin types and hair colors
  • Fast treatment sessions
  • Contact cooling technology to minimize discomfort
  • Cost-effective compared to long-term use of temporary methods
  • No post-treatment downtime

What Areas Can Be Treated With IPL and Laser Hair Removal?

These are versatile hair reduction solutions, designed to treat an array of body areas. Their adaptability ensures that both larger surfaces and more delicate regions can be addressed with precision. Some of the most commonly treated areas include the following:

  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Sideburns
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Underarms
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Bikini line
  • Legs

What Is the Difference Between Laser and IPL?

IPL and laser are both powerful modalities for hair reduction. Though they are often categorized together, they are different technologies, with the primary difference being the light source used.

Lasers use a single wavelength (color) of light produced as a continuous, focused beam. IPL uses a broad spectrum of wavelengths (multiple colors) delivered in pulses. With both modalities, the light targets melanin in the hair follicles and generates heat to damage the follicles.

Laser hair removal may require fewer sessions than IPL due to its focused and intense energy. IPL treatments are often considered less painful and individual sessions can be quicker, but more total sessions may be required. IPL is generally known for being more versatile for a range of skin types, hair colors and hair sizes; however, our Alma Soprano laser can also treat all skin and hair types.

The choice between IPL and laser hair removal depends on factors such as skin type, hair color, hair thickness and the size of the treatment area. During your consultation, our experienced practitioners will assess your individual needs and recommend the most suitable treatment option.

Who Is a Candidate for IPL or Laser Treatments?

One of the chief advantages of our hair removal technologies is that they are viable for patients of most skin tones and hair colors. Like any aesthetic treatment, however, no one solution is right for everyone.

IPL and laser tend to work best for individuals with light to medium skin tones and dark hair. This is because the technology targets the melanin in hair, and a contrast between the skin and hair color can make this process safer and more effective. Additionally, the higher melanin content in dark hair absorbs the light more efficiently. Blonde, red, grey or white hair is less likely to respond to laser or IPL.

While these are ideal conditions, they are not limitations. Individuals with darker skin tones or lighter hair colors can also benefit from these treatments, thanks to our cutting-edge Palomar and Alma devices and our experienced practitioners who tailor each session to the individual’s needs.

Those who have recently tanned, either through sun exposure or artificial tanning products, may be advised to wait before undergoing hair removal. Tanned skin can increase the risk of side effects, such as burns or discoloration. Certain skin conditions and medications are also contraindications to treatment.

You will consult with one of our experienced practitioners before undergoing any hair removal treatment. This allows us to assess your skin and hair type, discuss your goals and determine if IPL or laser is the right choice for you.

What Precautions Should Be Taken Before Treatment?

Preparing for your hair removal treatment can enhance the procedure’s effectiveness and minimize potential side effects. The following pre-treatment steps help ensure you get the most out of your IPL or laser session:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and artificial tanning products for at least two weeks
  • Do not wax or pluck hairs in the treatment area for at least four weeks, as these hair removal methods affect the follicle
  • Shaving is allowed and can be done a day or two before your treatment, as it leaves the hair follicle intact
  • Refrain from using skincare products containing retinoids, acids or other ingredients that could increase skin sensitivity for at least one week
  • Ensure the treatment area is clean and free from any lotions, creams or makeup on the day of your session

What Is the IPL or Laser Hair Removal Treatment Process?

IPL and laser hair removal treatments begin with cleansing the targeted area to rid it of any lotions, oils or makeup. The device is calibrated based on factors such as skin color and hair thickness.

The handpiece is then placed against the skin while it emits light. It is moved methodically through the treatment zone, ensuring complete and even coverage. Once the session concludes, a soothing topical product or cold compress might be applied.

The duration of each hair removal session can vary. While a smaller area like the upper lip might be addressed in mere minutes, more expansive regions such as the back or legs could require up to an hour.

Are IPL and Laser Hair Removal Painful?

The sensation is often described as a series of light snaps against the skin, akin to the feeling of a rubber band being gently flicked. Individual pain thresholds vary, and some areas of the body may be more sensitive than others, but most patients find the treatment tolerable.

One of the standout features of our IPL and laser systems is their integrated contact cooling technology. These advanced features cool the skin’s surface to make the treatment significantly more comfortable and protect the skin from thermal injury.

What Is the Downtime and Recovery After IPL and Hair Removal?

There is virtually no downtime with IPL hair removal or laser hair removal. Most patients can resume their daily activities immediately after the session, with minimal side effects that do not impede regular routines.

The treated area may exhibit some redness and/or swelling after the session. The appearance is similar to that of a mild sunburn and usually subsides within a few hours to a couple of days.

Your skin can be more sensitive after a hair removal session. Protect it from sun exposure, heat exposure and any skincare products that can be irritating. Use a gentle moisturizer to nourish your skin and alleviate any feelings of tightness or dryness that might occur post-treatment.

What Results Can Be Achieved With IPL or Laser Hair Removal?

The effects of IPL or laser hair removal become evident relatively quickly. After the initial session, you may notice a reduction in hair regrowth within two to three weeks. With each subsequent session, the reduction becomes more pronounced, and some patients experience up to an 80-90% reduction in new hair growth. Hairs that do regrow are often finer and lighter in color.

The results achieved with IPL or laser are long-lasting. No method can guarantee complete and permanent hair removal, however, the convenience and duration of the results make these technologies a near-permanent solution to unwanted hair. Results can be maintained with occasional touch-up sessions scheduled as needed, once a year or even less frequently.

How Many Treatment Sessions May Be Needed?

Hair grows in a cycle with multiple stages. IPL and laser hair removal are most effective when targeting hair in its active growth phase. Given that not all hairs are in this phase simultaneously, multiple sessions ensure that a majority of hair follicles are treated effectively over time.

On average, most patients require six to eight sessions to achieve optimal hair reduction. This range is a general guideline, and the exact number can vary based on individual factors such as hair color, skin tone and hair density in the targeted area, as well as whether IPL or laser technology is used.

Sessions are typically scheduled four to six weeks apart. Spacing sessions appropriately allows the treatment to target hair in the right growth phase, maximizing the reduction achieved in each appointment.
