What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is a procedure to reshape the nose. It is one of the most technically challenging cosmetic surgery operations, which is why it should only be performed by experienced plastic surgeons. There are two types of rhinoplasties: cosmetic and reconstructive.

What to Expect When Getting Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is an in-office procedure performed under general anesthesia. Some preparation and downtime are necessary to ensure you are happy with your results and to minimize risks.

Preparation

To prepare for surgery, you will meet with your surgeon for a consultation. They will review your medical history, perform a physical exam and discuss your expectations. You may need to avoid certain medications before surgery, perform medical tests and arrange for help wih your return home.

Procedure

During a rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes a small incision inside or between the nostrils. Depending on what your surgeon is trying to achieve, they may remove excess bone and cartilage, readjust the cartilage or place implants. The surgery usually takes two to three hours. After that, the incision is closed, and a splint is placed inside the nostrils. The surgical site is covered in gauze.

Recovery

Patients are initially taken to a recovery room where they are monitored before being sent home. The swelling in your nose will start to subside around two weeks following surgery. Full recovery can take anywhere between four months and a year.

Results

Your final results can take several months to show as scar tissue forms and the nose adjusts. Results from rhinoplasty are permanent; however, revision rhinoplasty can be performed when the results are not satisfactory.
