Schedule AppointmentSpider veins (also known as telangiectasias) are small, thread-like veins located close to the skin surface. Resembling a spider’s web or tree branches, these veins are typically red, blue or purple in color and are most commonly found on the legs and face.
Unlike varicose veins, which are larger and may bulge above the skin’s surface, spider veins are smaller and do not cause the same physical discomfort. They are a cosmetic concern rather than a serious health issue.
Spider veins are more common in women than in men. You may have a higher risk of developing spider veins if you have a family history of vein disease, if you are sedentary at work or in your leisure time, if you smoke or if you are frequently in the sun. Spider veins also become more common with age, hormonal changes and childbearing.
Schedule AppointmentAesthetic Polyclinic offers spider vein removal with laser and sclerotherapy. Both approaches deliver results with almost no downtime or discomfort. After a consultation, one of our experienced medical providers can tell you which treatment would be most suitable for you.
Laser therapy is a quick and effective procedure that uses a focused beam of light to destroy unwanted veins. The light targets the pigment in the blood and warms the vessel, causing it to collapse and disappear.
Each session typically lasts 15 to 30 minutes. During the treatment, the laser is applied over the targeted vein while it emits a particular wavelength of light. The light is absorbed by the hemoglobin in the veins and generates heat, causing the vein to collapse. Over time, the damaged vein is absorbed and processed as waste by the body.
Recovery from laser vein treatment is generally swift and straightforward, with most patients able to resume their normal activities immediately. Possible side effects include mild redness, swelling or bruising at the treatment site. These usually subside within a few days.
The full effects become visible within a few weeks post-treatment, as the body gradually processes the treated veins. The number of laser treatments required varies; some patients achieve a satisfying outcome with just one session, while others may need multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart.
Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a chemical solution into the spider vein, which causes the vein to scar and forces blood to reroute through healthier vessels. The surrounding tissue eventually absorbs the collapsed vein and it fades from view.
A sclerosing solution is administered into the affected veins using a fine needle. This solution irritates the lining of the blood vessels, causing them to collapse. Over the coming weeks, the treated veins turn into scar tissue and gradually disappear. The sclerotherapy procedure takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the number and size of veins being treated.
High-impact exercise, sun exposure and hot baths or saunas should be avoided for several days after the procedure. Graduated compression stockings are worn for up to a week following treatment. Outside of these recommendations, other activities can be resumed immediately.
